Today's post reviews authoritative research findings regarding the current size of the pest control industry in 2021.
How Big Is the Pest Control Industry?
According to the National Pest Management Association's 2019 Fact Sheet, the United States' pest control industry currently comprises:
- 19,295 different pest control companies
- 142,320 service technicians working across the country
- More than $9.3 billion in annual billing revenue
Consistent with the 4.4% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) predicted by Specialty Consultants, the U.S. structural pest control market is on track to reach $10 billion by the end of this year, according to Pest Control Technology.
US market movements mirror those seen around the world. Fortune Business Insights values the global pest control market at $31.94 billion by 2027, thanks in equal parts to the advent of pest control software and the rapidly multiplying insect population. These growth projections will likely be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but since pest control businesses fall under Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's (CISA) "essential business" designation, owners can expect minimal disruptions.
Pest control industry growth and profits are supported by multiple revenue streams. The NPMA's 2016 Business Outlook Survey, which compiled survey results from more than 10,427 different pest control businesses, found that:
- 95% of pest control businesses offer ant control
- 93% offer rodent control
- 92% offer cockroach control
- 89% offer flea control
- 79% offer bed bug control
- 68% offer termite control
- 55% offer mosquito control
- 45% offer bird control
- 42% offer wildlife control
In addition to these revenue streams, Pestmaster business owners also provide vector health services and vegetation management as part of their service package.
The NPMA report also highlights potential opportunities for newcomers looking to capitalize on unmet consumer demands. With less than half of pest control companies currently offering bird control and wildlife control, and only 55% involved in mosquito control, this segment has plenty of room for new entrants.
In conclusion, while the pest control market continues to grow at breakneck speed, even amidst the economic pressures of COVID-19, it still enjoys relatively low competitive pressures, as demand continues to outpace supply, creating several service shortages.
